Marine police make 33 arrests with seizures reaching RM15 mln this year

MIRI, Dec 11: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Miri Maritime Zone recorded 33 arrests this year, including violations of the Malaysian Fisheries Act, with seizures valued at nearly RM15 million.

In a news report by TVS, deputy director of Operations for the Miri Maritime Zone Commander Mahkos Juing, highlighted several high-profile cases, including the seizure of drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes, as well as the arrest of foreign fishing vessels from Vietnam and Indonesia.

“These operations led to the detention of 152 individuals, including 27 locals and 125 foreigners,” he said at a press conference at the MMEA Miri Maritime Zone Complex today.

He added that the total value of the seizures was estimated at almost RM15 million, covering court fines, proceeds from the auction of fuel and fish, as well as compound fines.

“MMEW recorded 542 days of asset operations at sea, resulting in 2,768 inspections and 1,115 searches,” he said.

Mahkos also stated that no maritime emergencies or incidents had been recorded this year.

“The effectiveness of ongoing safety campaigns and briefings has increased the maritime community’s awareness of the importance of safety at sea,” he explained. ā€” DayakDaily
