KUCHING, May 3: Motorists will now be able renew their Malaysian driving licence (LMM) for up to 10 years, which is double the current renewal limit of five years.

Announcing this, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said that Malaysian motorists who renew their driving licence for 10 years at once will only be charged for a period of nine years, effectively giving them a year of renewal for free or a 10 per cent discount.

“The renewal fee is RM30 per year and for a 10-year renewal will cost RM300. With the discount, you only need to pay RM270 and can save up to RM30.

“As such, those keen must ensure that the remaining validity period of their driving licence is not more than one year,” he said in a statement after a press conference in Putrajaya today.

The public may renew their driving licence under this latest initiative with a special fee rate beginning Monday (May 8) at Road Transport Department (JPJ) offices and counters throughout the country.

However, this initiative is only applicable to Malaysians. Foreigners as well as long-term pass holders are not eligible.

In addition, Loke also introduced a second initiative which allows Malaysian driving licence holders whose licence validity period has expired from Jan 1, 2018 onwards to renew their licence without having to retake the driving test.

The special authorisation for renewal of expired Malaysian driving licences, he said, was to address challenges faced by Malaysians abroad who were unable to renew their driving licence due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Movement Control Order (MCO).

“However, this special permission is only valid until Dec 31, 2023, after which the existing rules will come into effect again on Jan 1, 2024.

“The public can start enjoying the benefits of these two initiatives from May 8, 2023 by dealing at the JPJ offices and counters only,” he said.

Transactions made through platforms provided by JPJ business partners such as Pos Malaysia, he added, will be subject to the readiness of system changes by the parties concerned. — DayakDaily
