KUCHING, May 29: Progress on a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Malaysia and South Korea on infrastructure and construction cooperation was among the key matters discussed during a courtesy visit by Malaysia’s Ministry of Works to South Korea’s Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), Park Sang Woo.

In a Facebook post today, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi noted that the first round of negotiations on the MoU took place in Kuala Lumpur on April 16, with the second round currently ongoing in Suwon, South Korea, from May 29 to 30.

“It is our mutual aspiration that the MoU can be finalised and signed during the ASEAN-Republic of Korea Summit in October 2025, to be hosted in Kuala Lumpur,” he shared.

He expressed strong optimism about the impact of the collaboration, stating that the MoU would pave the way for valuable opportunities in technology transfer, capacity building, and the development of safer, more efficient, and sustainable infrastructure, including road and highways for Malaysia.

“It also aligns with the objectives of the Malaysian ITS Roadmap 2030, which envisions a smart, inclusive and resilient mobility ecosystem infrastructure,” he said.

During the meeting, both ministers also reviewed previous bilateral initiatives, including the successful Road and Construction Technology Cooperation Seminar held on April 15. Co-hosted by Malaysia’s Ministry of Works and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the seminar gathered over 130 participants from both countries, comprising government officials and industry stakeholders.

The two ministers also explored further avenues for cooperation in road development, advanced construction technologies, and the deployment of intelligent transport systems (ITS).

“Malaysia remains committed to nurturing a strong and meaningful partnership with the Republic of Korea for the mutual benefit of both our nations and peoples,” Nanta added. – DayakDaily
