KUCHING, Sept 10: To mark the 50th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations, the Hainan Provincial Government and Haikou Seminary unconditionally injected four-year college tuition worth RM2 million for 32 students from Sarawak over a four-year period, allowing them to receive free scholarships to prepare for next year’s studies.
According to a Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) press release, the fifth batch of six students recommended by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), accompanied by their parents, were scheduled to depart for Hainan Haikou University of Economics and Trade on Sept 9 in the morning.
Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang, SUPP Batu Kitang branch youth chief Councilor Alvin Chong, and organising secretary Gerald Goh were at the airport yesterday to send the students and parents off early in the morning.
“A group of local students and parents led by Cr Amy Tnay will arrive at Haikou University on Sept 10 and will be welcomed by the school and directed to the campus for immediate registration,” the press release read.
SUPP stated that MPP has been entrusted by Hainan Haikou University of Economics and Trade to recruit high school graduates from Padawan since 2019.
“Hainan Haikou University of Economics and Trade has provided these admitted students with four years of free scholarships.
“From 2019 up to present, MPP has recommended 32 local students to study at Hainan Haikou University of Economics and Trade.
“Among them, students enrolled in 2019 graduated successfully in early June this year and returned after finishing their studies. The three graduates have now returned to Malaysia and are working in the private sector.
“Local students receive higher education in Haikou, Hainan, a city that China has developed into a free trade port.
“Students are immersed in an international educational environment and way of thinking. Local students are also moving towards the international world as Hainan city develops internationally. It has broadened their horizons and provided them with new experiences.
“When they return to the country after their studies, they will be able to give back what they have learned to their motherland, Sarawak. This is a very rare and practical two-way trip between Malaysia and China.”
The department selections for the six students in 2023 are as follows:
