KUCHING, Feb 22: Minister of Transport Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin has proposed to open an emergency lane as an extra lane at the Sungai Tujoh Toll for nearby villagers and for the Customs and Immigration Department staff travelling to the depot during peak hours and weekends.

According to a statement issued by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Lee said this proposal could solve and ease the congestion at the toll area and smoothen the queuing system.

“The local villagers have had to queue up to two to three hours, especially on the weekends and public holidays,” he lamented.

“I have suggested to contractors that the installation of LEDs and a larger signboard so that toll users will be able differentiate the right traffic lanes for Malaysian and foreigners from a distance.

Lee made the suggestion after making a working visit to see the traffic congestion at the toll payment counter building area at Asean Bridge within the vicinity of the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) of Sungai Tujoh, Kuala Baram yesterday.

He revealed that he had proposed to the Customs and Immigration Departments to improve, upgrade and redesign the facilities to accommodate users.

“This included upgrading the electronic system technology facilities and the more practically designed counter at ICQS,” he disclosed.
