KUCHING, April 25: The 11th Youth Communication Camp (YCC), organised by the Kuching Toastmasters Club, will be held from June 3–5 at Kem Putra Sentosa, Sematan.

According to a press release, 200 campers comprising Form 4 to Form 6 students from 40 schools in Sarawak have registered for the camp.

“YCC has touched the lives of more than 2,000 campers from schools in the Kuching, Samarahan, Bau, Mukah, Lundu, Sematan, and Serian districts since its inception in 2012.

“Throughout the years, the camp has remained steadfast to its three main thrusts: public speaking, team building and leadership development, and talent showcasing.

“To date, YCC remains the only camp in East Malaysia focusing primarily on public speaking, which is also much aligned to the spirit of Toastmasters International,” said the press release.

Campers are trained to construct a speech while highlighting the importance of substance and logical development. Students are also guided and trained to deliver a speech using eye contact, body language, and voice projection.

The main feature on the third day of the camp is a speech competition, better known as ‘Lend Me Your Ears’, which features 12 finalists. The two categories of the competition are Prepared Speech and Impromptu Speech Competitions. The competition winner will win the YB Karim Hamzah Challenge Shield named after the camp’s patron, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah—the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak and Minister for Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak.

“The approximate cost to host a camper for the camp is RM700 which includes accommodation, meals, T-shirts, insurance, and transportation, amongst others.

“The fee for each camper, however, is heavily subsidised as they only pay RM120—the rest is borne by Abdul Karim as the club’s patron and corporate sponsors Mitsubishi Corporation, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Nova Fusion Sdn Bhd, and
Bintulu Development Authority.

“Subsidisation via corporate sponsorship funds is a socially inclusive strategy by the Organising Committee, as they aim to accommodate students from all backgrounds in Sarawak,” said the press release.

As registration is ongoing, students wishing to partake in the 11th YCC or organisations or individuals interested in sponsoring the camp may contact camp secretary Frank Foo at 011-25093033 or email youthcomcamp@gmail.com. — DayakDaily
