KUCHING, April 23: Kuala Rajang has high potential for microalgae production and carbon storage initiative, says Datu Len Talif Salleh.
The Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, and Kuala Rajang assemblyman said Kuala Rajang has the best environment to produce microalgae, including the biggest mangrove forests in the country.
“If we look at it in terms of carbon trading, mangrove forests have 10 times more capacity for carbon storage
“Since Kuala Rajang has the biggest mangrove forests in Malaysia, we can utilise it for carbon trading,” he said when met by reporters at his Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house in Demak Jaya, today.
Asked about when Sarawak would start commercialise its carbon trading, Len Talif said discussions are still ongoing.
He added that there is also a need for an assessment to gauge the capacity for carbon storage to ensure potential buyers and sellers can agree on the quantum. — DayakDaily
