KUCHING, March 11: KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital (KPJ Kuching) has achieved a major milestone in neurosurgical treatment, becoming the first private hospital in East Malaysia to successfully perform Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgeries.
According to a media release today, this breakthrough expands treatment options for movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and essential tremors, offering new hope to patients in need of specialised neurological care.
The hospital recently completed its first two DBS procedures, marking a significant step forward in its capabilities for advanced neurosurgery. DBS is a highly specialised procedure that involves implanting electrodes in the brain to send electrical impulses to targeted areas, helping to control symptoms of movement disorders.
In line with its commitment to enhancing neurological care, KPJ Kuching has also launched the Neurosurgery and Spine Clinic, a dedicated centre for treating neurological conditions.
Led by Neurosurgeon Dr Lau Bik Liang, the clinic aims to complement government hospital services while providing expanded treatment options for insured and self-paying patients.
KPJ Healthcare president and managing director Chin Keat Chyuan emphasised the hospital’s commitment to advancing specialised healthcare services.
“The introduction of DBS at KPJ Kuching underscores our dedication to expanding access to life-changing treatments. As the first private hospital in East Malaysia to offer this procedure, we are not only improving healthcare accessibility but also strengthening KPJ’s capabilities in advanced surgeries. Our patient-centric approach ensures that every individual receives the best possible care, focusing on both treatment outcomes and the overall patient journey.”
KPJ Kuching’s medical director, Dr Mahadhir Alhady Sulaiman, highlighted the significance of this achievement: “This marks a new era for neurosurgical treatment in Sarawak and East Malaysia. Patients with movement disorders can now access DBS in a private healthcare setting, reducing the need to travel outside the region for specialised care. More importantly, they can receive world-class treatment closer to home.”
Meanwhile, Dr Lau stressed the importance of public awareness regarding neurosurgical services: “Many people do not fully understand the field of neurosurgery, which covers everything related to the brain, nerves, and spine. If you experience issues in these areas, consulting a neurosurgeon or neurologist is crucial to receiving the right treatment.”
With these advancements, KPJ Kuching Specialist Hospital is reshaping the neurosurgical landscape in East Malaysia, providing life-changing treatment options that enhance mobility, reduce symptoms, and improve the overall quality of life for patients with movement disorders. — DayakDaily
