KUCHING, Sept 30: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) is looking into recommendations to regulate centres offering beauty treatment services in Malaysia, whilst the industry is expected to reach a market value of over USD999 million by 2026.

KPDNHEP Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said an engagement session was held recently between the ministry and the United Kingdom’s Vocational Training Charitable Trust (VTCT) to discuss this matter.

VTCT is a beauty training centre recognised by Ofqual, a UK government agency that reports directly to the UK Parliament for qualification and legislation matters involving vocational training.

Nanta said among the important aspects discussed include registering beauty centre operators and workers to ensure they receive beauty skills training from a recognised body.

Other subject matters were about ensuring the use of registered machines and equipment, conducting skills courses, modules and certifications from recognised bodies, protecting consumers through insurance coverage, and ensuring the ingredients used in beauty treatment are certified by the Health Ministry.

“All of the above aspects have been discussed with VTCT to see how they can be applied in Malaysia, in addition to refining the legal and administrative regulatory requirements to ensure that the beauty industry in Malaysia can provide confidence to consumers through safe treatment.

“All these efforts are expected to help strengthen the beauty industry, which can not only generate income for the country but also guarantee a high level of safety quality for consumers,” said Nanta in a statement today. — DayakDaily
