King confers award on survey dept officer who died on duty near M’sia-Brunei border in Lawas

KUCHING, June 1: An officer from the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia (Jupem), Donysius Gabriel Goh, who died while on duty at the Malaysia–Brunei border in Lawas in March this year was posthumously awarded the Bintang Jasa Perkasa Persekutuan (JPP) in recognition of his service and contributions.

According to Bernama, Goh was the sole recipient of the honour which was presented in conjunction with the Official Birthday of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, in a ceremony at Istana Negara in Kuala Lumpur today, which saw a total of 161 individuals conferred federal honours.

The JPP is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary bravery and courage outside the battlefield.

The Ceremonial and International Conference Secretariat Division (BIUPA) portal of the Prime Minister’s Department states that JPP recipients receive a monthly allowance of RM1,000, while for posthumous recipients, the allowance is paid as a lump sum of RM10,000 to the next of kin.

It was reported that in March 17, 36-year-old Goh was reported missing after being swept away by strong currents while crossing a river in Ulu Temburong in Lawas during an international Malaysia-Brunei boundary survey operation together with five other colleagues.

Goh’s body was later found on March 25, approximately 500 metres from the last location where he was reported missing. — DayakDaily
