KUCHING, May 11: Pekit Kumang can serve as a platform to showcase traditional Iban attire and, more importantly, to promote and preserve the community’s rich cultural identity and heritage — which has now gained recognition not just in Sarawak, but internationally.
Kapit MP Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi said this in response to some parties stating that the use of traditional clothing is damaging the image, customs, and culture. He described such remarks as inappropriate and should not be made an issue.

He further emphasised that the Iban community must continue to preserve the customs and culture that have been passed down from generation to generation.
“Programmes in conjunction with Gawai Day such as ‘Pekit Kumang’ should also be continued because it not only symbolises identity but also stimulates various socio-economic activities of the population.
“With the traditional Iban clothing used during ‘Pekit Kumang’ being known and famous not only in this State but also internationally,” he said in a Facebook post after attending the ‘Mantar Gawai Pelilih Menua Song’ Dinner last night.

The event, which is held every year, is not only unique but also a symbol of unity and harmony of Kapit’s various races, customs, and cultures.
In line with this year’s Gawai theme, ‘Beserakup, Betulung, Anang Rindang’, Nanta, who is also Works Minister, reminded the community in Kapit to continue to unite and work together to ensure continued development and prosperity in the region.
“’Anang Rindang’ also invites us, the people of Song and Kapit as a whole, not to be complacent in pursuing the trend of development and progress.”
He highlighted that numerous development projects are currently being planned and implemented across Kapit and their success are dependent on the support and cooperation from all parties, as well as a stable and harmonious environment.
“In this regard, I urge the community in Kapit to continue to support the existing leaders and government to ensure the continuity of development efforts,” he added.
Also in attendance at the event were Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan, Political Secretary to the Minister of Works Ambrose Abong, and other government officials and staff. – DayakDaily
