KUCHING, April 13: Inspector Kanang Usin, from Bintulu, has set his sights on being the first Sarawakian to conquer Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain peak, after being chosen to join the Everest 2022 Malaysian Family team.

According to the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg donated funds to Kanang as Sarawak’s representative in the Everest 2022 Malaysian Family team to assist the latter in achieving his mission and dream.

During a brief symbolic ceremony, Deputy Minister in the Premier of Sarawak’s Department (Corporate Affairs and Sarawak Public Communication Unit) Datuk Abdullah Saidol, representing Abang Johari handed over the funds and the Sarawak flag to Kanang.

“Kanang’s involvement will make history as the first Sarawakian to conquer the summit of Mount Everest.

“The Sarawak Premier and all the people of the State will definitely pray for the success of Kanang and the expedition team in their hopes of conquering the mountain,” Abdullah said yesterday after meeting with Ukas at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

He also welcomed the participation of individuals from various groups in the expedition based on the Malaysian Family concept.

“The uniqueness of this expedition group, which includes people of various ethnicities as well as people with disabilities, demonstrates the importance of us continuing to maintain unity with each other even in an atmosphere of diversity of opinion,” he added.

Kanang, who serves in VAT 69 of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), expressed his gratitude to the Sarawak Premier for his support and contribution.

“I hope this climbing initiative will be able to inspire other young Sarawakian youths to respond to similar challenges in the future,” Kanang said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Delegation, Azmi Afif Ishak, stated that the 2022 Everest Malaysian Family mission, which will begin on April 15, was realised when a group of climbers from different backgrounds wanted to raise the aspirations for unity among Malaysians.

Earlier, Kanang along with other members of a Altitude Exploration Club delegation paid a courtesy call on the Malaysian Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs and Member of Parliament for Kapit, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi. — DayakDaily
