KUCHING, Sept 19: The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting to discuss the N67 Jepak state constituency by-election on Monday (Sept 25).
According to a press release issued today by the EC, it received an official notice of the unexpected vacancy of the seat from Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar following the death of its incumbent, Datuk Talib Zulpilip, last Friday (Sept 15).
“In accordance with Article 21(5) of the Sarawak State Constitution which provides for the contingency vacancy of DUN seat N67 Jepak, Sarawak, needs to be filled within 60 days from the date the vacant seat is confirmed by the EC,” it said.
It went on to say that the special meeting chaired by EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh will determine the important dates for the by-election, such as candidate nomination day and voting day.
Meanwhile, at a press conference earlier today at the DUN Complex here, Mohamad Asfia said that a by-election must be held for the N67 Jepak State constituency seat as there is still more than two years left before the automatic dissolution of the current DUN Sarawak.
The late Talib was a former Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman).
He had served as an assemblyman for Jepak since 1996, a total of 27 years.
During the Sarawak State election in 2021, Talib defended the N67 Jepak seat with a majority of 4,243 votes. — DayakDaily
