Japanese restaurant owner fined RM4,500 for drug possession charge

KUCHING, July 27: A Japanese restaurant owner was sentenced to a fine of RM4,500 for a charge of possessing 2.63 grammes of methamphetamine.

Tomu Morioka, 38, pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, read together with Section 12(3) of the same Act, which carries a maximum fine of RM100,000 or with imprisonment of not more than five years, or both upon conviction.


Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali accepted his guilty plea and sentenced him to a fine of RM4,500 or in default to 10 months’ imprisonment.

He was found possessing 2.63 grammes of methamphetamine inside a room at an inn in Jalan Ban Hock, at about 11.25am on May 6.

According to the brief facts of the case, the accused was arrested by a team of police from the Kuching District (IPD) Narcotics Crime Investigation Department when the team found a small bag on the table of the room.

The police further found four packets of transparent plastic bags which contained substances suspected to be methamphetamine, which was later confirmed by a chemist’s report.

Prosecuting Officer ASP Rogayah Rosli prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented by counsel. — DayakDaily
