Jalan Stutong Baru accident: 40yo man dies in hospital, police investigating reckless driving

KUCHING, Sept 17: A 40-year-old male passenger who sustained serious injuries in a two-vehicle collision along Jalan Stutong Baru early this morning has succumbed to his injuries at the Sarawak General Hospital’s (SGH) emergency ward at 3.30am today.

In a statement today, Kuching District Police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said that the local Chinese man was pronounced dead by doctors.

In the collision that occurred at around 1am, investigations revealed that the Proton S70 driven by a 35-year-old Chinese national woman lost control while travelling from Airport Road down Jalan Stutong Baru.

“The vehicle veered into the opposite lane and collided with an oncoming Perodua Axia driven by a 34-year-old local man, who sustained minor injuries from the impact,” he said.

The deceased was a passenger in the car.

Mohd Farhan said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.

“If convicted, the driver could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of RM50,000,” he added.

The police have urged anyone with information related to the incident to assist in the investigation by contacting Traffic Investigating Officer Inspector Charlie Aloysius at 014-8682068, or BSPTD Kuching at 082-259900, or by visiting the nearest police station.

Mohd Farhan also reiterated his advice for the public to drive cautiously and adhere to traffic laws to avoid accidents and unforeseen incidents. — DayakDaily
