KUCHING, May 14: The International Conference on Engineered Wood Sarawak 2023 will be held at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) from May 16 to May 17.

The conference manifests a continuous stride in promoting engineered wood among stakeholders and industry players in Sarawak, according to Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (STIDC) in a statement.

It said that the conference will highlight the benefits and potential value of engineered wood products that are yet to be fully tapped to boost Sarawak’s economy besides sharing policies, legislation, standards and achievements by distinguished speakers from within and outside the country.

STIDC is encouraging the use of engineered wood in housing and building construction in Sarawak in support of the Sarawak government’s initiative to promote green development, environmental sustainability and carbon storage.

“According to Allied Market Research, the engineered wood market was valued at $248,761.1 million in 2019 and is poised to increase to $400,450.9 million by 2027, registering a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 6.2 per cent from 2020 to 2027.

“The Sarawak government is committed to putting its transformation strategy into action and promoting high value-added products including engineered wood using raw materials from planted forests.

“This is in line with the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 to ensure economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental sustainability,” said STIDC.

The statement also revealed that the speakers of the conference comprise professionals in engineered wood construction and architecture, structural engineers, researchers and academicians who will share their knowledge and expertise in producing and using engineered wood in the local environment to help promote this industry in Sarawak.

Among topics at the conference are ‘STIDC Driving Sustainability for Timber Industry’; ‘New Age Timber Construction’; ‘Experience, Recent Developments and Future in Mass Timber Structures in Malaysia’; ‘A Regulatory Perspective on Performance-based Design’; and ‘Challenges faced by Industrial Timber Plantation and Perspective of Sustainability of the Planted Forest Industry in Sarawak’. — DayakDaily
