SIBU, March 8: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Bukit Assek is giving out 1,000 bottles of 2kg cooking oil to women voters in the constituency for two days in conjunction with International Women’s Day, which is today.
“We asked our branch’s women’s wing what we should give to women on this day, and they suggested cooking oil, which in Chinese is similar to ‘jia yu’ (come on), a motivating word,” said Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng.
Throughout the two days, 500 bottles were given out today, with the remaining to be given out tomorrow (March 9).
“Previously, we organised dinner functions, but this year, we decided on a different approach, which is to give away cooking oil so that more women could benefit,” he said.
Chieng said the programme was to honour women’s achievements and contributions to society in whatever role they play.
“This is also a day for us to emphasise the voice of women and renew our commitment, especially on gender equality,” he said. — DayakDaily
