KUCHING, May 31: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Sarawak successfully carried out a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) operation today involving a Chinese crewman who sustained a wrist injury aboard a cargo vessel in waters off Tanjung Po.
MMEA Sarawak director First Admiral Mohd Khairi Abdul Aziz said the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Kuching received a call from the vessel’s agent at 11.40am requesting assistance to transport the injured crewman for further medical treatment.
The victim, identified as Xian Xu, 36, a Chinese national, was serving aboard the bulk carrier CX GEMMA, which is registered under the Marshall Islands flag.
At the time of the incident, the vessel was located approximately 7.5 nautical miles north of Tanjung Po.
Following the request, MMEA deployed patrol boat KILAT 35 to the vessel’s location at 12.20pm.
“The boat successfully came alongside CX GEMMA at 12.50pm and safely transferred the victim from the vessel,” Mohd Khairi said in a statement today.
The injured crewman was then escorted to the KOMTAS Jetty, where he was handed over to the vessel’s agent and subsequently transported to the hospital for further treatment.
Mohd Khairi said MMEA remains committed to providing emergency assistance and ensuring the safety and welfare of the maritime community and seafarers operating in Malaysian waters.
He also advised members of the public and the maritime community to prioritise safety while at sea and to report any emergencies immediately through the 999 emergency line or the Sarawak Maritime Operations Centre for prompt assistance.
“The agency will continue to strengthen its role in safeguarding lives and maintaining safety in the nation’s waters,” he added. — DayakDaily
