KUCHING, Mar 17: The government can impose quota and offer better incentives for Sarawakian non-Bumiputera to join the Royal Malaysian Police Force (PDRM).

Dato Sim Kiang Chiok, who is Sarawak United People’s Party Stakan chairman says the government can target Sarawakians to fulfil the numbers and provide a better incentive to entice them to join the police force.

“The government might want to set a quota for the minority population to join PDRM,” says Sim who is also Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Development (Sheda) Kuching Branch chairman.

“In Sarawak, it would help to also set a quota for Sarawakians to meet the Borneonisation in PDRM and another federal civil service as agreed in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),” he said in a statement.

Sim was responding to the recent statement by Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador on PDRM facing difficulty in the recruitment of non-Bumiputeras since 2010.

Abdul Hamid said the Chinese currently made up 1.9 per cent of the total number of 123,000 officers and personnel in the country and for Indians, three per cent.

He also said the number of Orang Asli joining the police force has also dropped over the years.

Abdul Hamid stressed that recruiting more non-Bumiputeras and Orang Asli into the police force was important in terms of resolving communication issues when dealing with cases.

He also said PDRM has targeted 30 per cent of recruitment from non-Bumiputera and Orang Asli.

Meanwhile, Sim added a balanced representation of races in the police force would enable it to better deal with all the citizens and solve their security needs. —DayakDaily
