Covid-19: Miri reports 88 new cases, majority detected via contact tracing

KUCHING, March 17: Miri reported the highest number of Covid-19 cases today as Sibu showed a decline.

According to a press statement from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) today, Miri reported 88 new Covid-19 cases, out of which, 77 cases were individuals traced to Covid-19 cases.


The balance of 11 cases comprised four individuals who underwent screening at the healthcare centre in Miri, four cases from a new cluster known as the Jalan Merpati Cluster and three individuals with symptoms screened at the Miri health centre.

On the other hand, Sibu which has reported the largest gains in infections in the past two days witnessed a significant reduction in the number of new cases today, reporting just 13 cases.

The cases comprised six individuals who went for screening at the Sibu healthcare centre, three individuals traced to Covid-19 positive cases, one individual linked to the Kampung Hilir Cluster, one individual linked to the Kiba Cluster, one medical staff, and one symptomatic individual who underwent screening at the Sibu healthcare centre.

In Kuching, there were 32 Covid-19 cases reported. Other districts which registered new cases include Bintulu (30), Serian (18), Sri Aman (12), Kapit (11), Meradong (7), Bukit Mabong (5), Betong (4), Samarahan (4) and Song (4).

Overall, Sarawak registered 225 new Covid-19 cases today, bringing the state’s tally to 13,110.

SDMC said there were 227 Covid-19 patients who recovered and were discharged from various hospitals. A total of 2,341 Covid-19 patients are still being treated for the coronavirus in various hospitals and low risk quarantine centres throughout Sarawak.

On another note, there were 243 new Person-Under-Investigation (PUI) cases with two PUI cases awaiting lab test results.
