KUCHING, Sept 9: Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi has directed Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO) chief executive officer Yusri Safri to investigate recent claims of sharp electricity bill spikes and issue a clear public explanation.
Speaking to reporters after the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2026 press conference today, Julaihi emphasised the need for transparent communication regarding the unusually high charges reported by consumers.
“I have conveyed this directive directly to SESCO Berhad chief executive officer Yusri Safri. They need to provide a clear explanation on this matter so the public is well-informed,” he said.
The directive follows recent reports that parent company Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) expressed readiness to review affected electricity bills to identify and resolve any issues related to billing or meter readings.
In a statement released on Sept 7, SEB announced that it is expanding dedicated customer support counters across Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu, and Miri until October 2026 to assist affected account holders.
The utility provider stated that all billing grievances submitted through its customer service channels will be evaluated against account history, billing records, and meter readings. Any identified discrepancies will be investigated and rectified.
SEB also noted that it had identified 22 customer cases previously raised on Facebook. Of those, 20 customers have been directly engaged, one new case is undergoing follow-up, and one customer could not be reached based on available contact details.
Customers seeking a review of their billed amounts may submit an appeal alongside supporting documents. It added that flexible payment arrangements are also available to assist customers in managing their accounts. — DayakDaily
