KUCHING, May 29: The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has asserted that notices of termination or eviction issued under the People’s Housing Programme (PPR) are part of its standard tenancy management and eligibility review process, and are not intended to burden any party.
In a statement responding to public concern over recent viral claims regarding tenancy terminations at the PPR Bandaria Park in Bintulu, HDC clarified that the management of PPR rental units is guided by established policies and conditions designed to ensure fair distribution of housing assistance to those most in need.
“The PPR initiative serves as temporary housing for low-income households occupying government land, as well as families who have yet to secure permanent homes, with rental rates set at affordable levels. The maximum tenancy period under the programme is 10 years.
“To ensure continued eligibility, the corporation conducts periodic reviews of tenants, allowing assistance to be directed to other qualified families who require housing support. Factors considered during tenancy renewal assessments include duration of tenancy, household income, property ownership status, payment records for rent and utilities, and adherence to tenancy conditions,” HDC stated in a statement today.
HDC added that all renewal applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the Special Housing Tenancy Approval Committee (SHTAC), which also takes into account welfare considerations such as health issues, loss of income, and family dependents.
The corporation noted that the rising number of PPR applications reflects ongoing demand for affordable housing, underscoring the importance of structured tenancy reviews to maintain fairness and efficiency in allocation.
HDC also urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information or speculation that could lead to misunderstanding.
“All information regarding PPR policies and management should be referred directly to HDC,” it added.
Reaffirming its commitment, HDC said it will continue to manage public housing in a fair, transparent, and responsible manner, particularly in supporting B40 households in need of affordable accommodation. — DayakDaily
