KUCHING, Aug 20: Air quality in Kuching deteriorated sharply this morning as the Air Pollutant Index (API) climbed to 180, placing the State capital in the unhealthy category and blanketing much of the city in haze.
According to the latest air quality readings released by the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak at 8am today, Serian and Lubok Antu recorded the highest API readings in the state at 185, followed closely by Kuching.
Several other areas across Sarawak also reported unhealthy air quality levels, reflecting a broader decline in atmospheric conditions across the State.
The unhealthy category, which covers API readings between 101 and 200, was also recorded in Samarahan (163), Sri Aman (173), Sarikei (153), Sibu (117), Lundu (175) and Tebedu (158).
Meanwhile, air quality in the central and northern regions of Sarawak remained at moderate levels. Mukah recorded an API reading of 91, while Bintulu registered 98, Samalaju 96, Miri 91 and ILP Miri 90. Kapit (68), Limbang (66) and Lawas (71) also remained within the moderate range.
Bario continued to enjoy the cleanest air in the State, recording an API reading of 33, which falls within the good category.
The worsening air quality comes amid hazy conditions affecting several parts of Sarawak, with visibility reduced in a number of areas. The situation has raised concerns over potential health risks, particularly for children, senior citizens and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.
Health authorities have advised the public to reduce prolonged outdoor exposure, stay well hydrated and wear face masks when outdoors, especially in areas experiencing unhealthy API levels. – DayakDaily
