KUCHING,Sept 15: Despite a slight general drop in the Air Pollutant Index (API) level to slightly below the 200 marks in most parts of Sarawak, it is still unhealthy by 12 noon today as haze still hits most places throughout the state.

According to the latest Air Pollutant Index (API) readings, Kuching is at 194.

Other areas under the unhealthy categories are Sibu (158), Sri Aman (169), Samarahan (181), Miri (110), Bintulu (144), Sarikei (171), ILP Miri (129), Kuala Baram (110), Mukah (123) and Samalaju (114).

Elsewhere in Sarawak, where the API records moderately healthy readings are (114), Limbang (93) and Kapit (93).

The poor air quality in the state has been attributed to severe forest fires in Sumatera and Kalimantan.

Malaysia’s API has five categories of air quality. Hazardous levels are readings above 300 while 201-300 is considered very unhealthy; 101-200 is unhealthy; 51-100 is moderate and everything below 50 is good. — DayakDaily
