10 areas in Kuching identified as hotspots for vehicle thefts

KUCHING, April 25: Police here have identified 10 areas in Kuching which account for the highest number of vehicle thefts.

Kuching District Police Chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said the areas are Samariang, Demak Laut, Metrocity, Tabuan Height, Taman Satria Jaya, BDC Stampin, King Centre, Sarawak General Hospital (HUS), Kuching Waterfront, Majma Mall, Abell Road, Petanak road, Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce Road, Rock Road and Farley Mall area.


ā€œThe most targeted vehicles are Yamaha LC motorcycle, Honda C100 motorcycle, Perodua Kancil, Mitsubishi Pajero, Toyota Fortuner and Toyota Hilux,ā€ he said in a statement yesterday (April 24).

Ahsmon said a study showed that the modus operandi used is by utilising a modified ‘T’ spanner Allen key, to break motorcycle handle locks and then damage the ignition key switch to start motorcycle engines.

According to him, some of the criminals even loaded the targeted motorcycles into vehicles such as vans or four-wheel drive vehicles.
