KUCHING, Aug 16: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) supports the King’s decision to appoint outgoing Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as interim prime minister until a new premier is chosen.

The ruling coalition in Sarawak also respects Muhyiddin and his cabinet’s decision to resign following Muhyiddin’s failure to hold the confidence of the majority in the Parliament.

GPS chief whip Dato Sri Fadillah Yusof said what Muhyiddin did is in accordance with the Article 43(4) of the Federal Constitution.

“GPS accepts the decision of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who has agreed for Tan Sri Muhyiddin to carry out his duties as the caretaker Prime Minister until a new Prime Minister is appointed. We uphold Parliamentary Democracy and Constitutional Monarchy,” said Fadillah in a press statement today.

Fadillah said the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government under Muhyiddin had done its best especially in tackling the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country including in accelerating the rollout of the national immunisation programme with is now showing positive results.

“However, I am a little upset that despite the PN government’s strong commitment and determination in dealing with the pandemic and helping the people, the 8th Prime Minister had to face the political pressure of a power struggle, which forced him to decide to step down.

“I would like to express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to Tan Sri Muhyiddin who had entrusted me with the duty of Senior Minister of Infrastructure and the duty of leading the Ministry of Works from 10 March 2020 to 16 August 2021,” said Fadillah who is also the Petrajaya MP.

Leading the Ministry of Works for the second time (Mar 10, 2021 to Aug 16, 2021) and for the first time (2013 – 2018), Fadillah said he had tried to his best ability to perform his duties and to provide infrastructure to the people in accordance with the confidence entrusted to him.

To whoever is taking over his position as the Works Minister, his hope is that the new minister will continue all projects which have been approved and planned for the benefit of the people, just as the PN government continued all projects that have been approved by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government which was in power for 22 months prior to the PN government.

“We should not make the people the victims of protracted political crises and frequent changes of government. Whatever projects promised to the people and for their benefit must continue,” Fadillah stressed. — DayakDaily
