SIBU, Sept 20: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is ready to take on any candidate, which includes Baru Bian of Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) for the Lawas seat in the 15th General Election.
Speaking to reporters after a land compensation presentation ceremony today, GPS deputy chairman Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan reasoned that GPS has been prepared for the election for quite some time now.
Awang Tengah was asked on GPS’ readiness to face Baru, who is said to not be defending his Selangau seat, but the Lawas seat which is his home constituency.
“Anyone can contest (in Lawas in GE15), we are a democratic country. We at the State level have already organised our preparations,” he said.
PSB president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh did not rule out the possibility that his newly appointed secretary general would contest in Lawas on Sept 5.
However, Wong said, the decision will only be made after Baru decides whether he will continue to stand in Selangau or move to Lawas.
Lawas has two state assembly seats, namely Bukit Sari which is currently held by Awang Tengah for five terms, and Ba’Kelalan which has been held by Baru since 2011.
The incumbent of the Lawas Parliament seat is Dato Henry Sum Agong from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) who is also Deputy Minister of Transport.
In July, Awang Tengah hinted that Sum might be re-nominated to defend his seat in GE15. — DayakDaily
