KUCHING, May 21: Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) have reaffirmed their commitment to remain in the unity government until the end of the current administration’s term.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who is also the government spokesperson, said the matter was conveyed during yesterday’s (May 20) Cabinet meeting.
“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed his appreciation for the commitment shown by all component parties in the unity government, particularly BN, GRS and GPS, which have pledged to continue their support and remain together until the end of the administration’s term.
“This commitment reflects the priority placed on the interests of the people and the nation, enabling the government to fully focus on addressing economic challenges arising from developments in West Asia, while ensuring the welfare of the people remains safeguarded,” he said at the weekly press conference of the Communications Ministry in Putrajaya, which was also streamed live via his social media yesterday.
Fahmi, who is also PKR information chief, declined to comment on speculation about the possibility of an earlier-than-expected state election (PRN).
“The next Cabinet meeting will be held on Monday, and we will provide further updates at the subsequent press briefing,” he said, as reported by TVS.
Earlier, Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the commission is fully prepared to handle any possibility of state legislative assembly (DUN) dissolutions.
He said preparations involve Melaka, Johor and Negeri Sembilan, with various proactive measures already in place to ensure operational readiness for any potential state elections.
Fahmi also said the issue of the resignation of Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad was not raised during the Cabinet meeting.
Instead, he said the Cabinet was briefed on preparations for the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting next month, including updates that two former MPs had vacated their seats.
“No, it was not discussed. There was only an update on preparations for the Dewan Rakyat sitting, which will begin on June 24, where two former MPs have vacated their seats. That was what was informed,” he said, as reported by the New Straits Times.
On May 17, Nik Nazmi and Rafizi announced they were leaving PKR and taking over Parti Bersama Malaysia, also known as the Malaysian United Party, which was established in 2016.
On Monday, the duo said they had submitted their resignation letters to the Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul to pursue a new political agenda and return the mandate to voters in both constituencies. — DayakDaily
