SIBU, Oct 27: A community leader, Kapitan Dato Wong Tiing Kiong will be contesting as an independent candidate for the Lanang parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election (GE15).
He confirmed this after buying the GE-15 nomination form at the Sibu Municipal Council office here, today.
Wong, 60, said he has a desire to serve the people and feels that only through a political platform can he contributes to society more effectively.
“My decision to contest in GE15 all started as a joke when some friends challenged me to contest in Lanang.
“Many of my friends called and WhatsApped me and pledged their support if I contest in the election. Of course, their strong encouragement played an important role for me to really dare to take this challenge,” he stressed.
The businessman who operates three food outlets, however, said he does not care if he loses in GE15 later and thinks that life must go on since Lanang is his birthplace.
Wong also vowed to do his best to ensure his victory in GE15.
“If I win this GE15, I will work hard to serve the people. I will also deal with community issues and see the problems faced by traders,” he explained.
Wong grew up in the Paradom area in his youth and moved to Sibu after his family moved their hardware business to Sibu town.
With his candidacy, the Lanang seat will see at least a four-cornered fight.
Incumbent Alice Lau Kiong Yien will defend the seat under Democratic Action Party (DAP) which is part of Pakatan Harapan (PH).
She is expected to be challenged by Parti Bumi Kenyalang secretary-general Priscilla Lau and a Sarawak United Peoples’Party (SUPP) candidate who is speculated to either be Dudong SUPP chief Wong Ching Yong or Sibu Municipal Councilor Raymond Tiong Eng Lee. — DayakDaily
