KUCHING, March 19: Four key infrastructure projects are currently underway in Bekenu, in the Miri Division, to enhance public facilities and stimulate local economic growth, according to Sarawak Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development (KPWK), Datuk Rosey Yunus.

According to a Suara Sarawak news report, the projects — including road upgrades, bridge construction, and the development of recreational areas — aim to improve residents’ quality of life and modernise existing infrastructure.

“The first project involves the upgrading of the road between Sepupok and Bakam, Miri, which was announced by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg during Hari Raya celebrations last year in Sepupok.

“With an allocation of RM157.9 million, the road project is managed by Sakomas Sdn Bhd and is scheduled to run from January 2, 2025, to January 1, 2028,” Rosey said at a press conference in Miri today.

She was speaking after attending a briefing by the Public Works Department (JKR) Miri on coastal road upgrade works and several community development initiatives in Bekenu.

The second project involves the construction of a new road connecting Kampung Rambai to Kampung Bulau at a total cost of RM57 million. The road will link several villages including Rambai, Sinup, Butak, and Bulau, and provide residents easier access to the Pan Borneo Highway.

“Previously, many villagers relied on river routes. This new road will significantly ease their mobility,” Rosey added.

The three-year project also includes the construction of two new bridges, one of which is a two-lane bridge to improve connectivity between the villages.

In addition, the long-awaited construction of the Kampung Bulau Bridge, costing RM6 million, has begun. The new bridge replaces the old suspension bridge that villagers have long depended on.

“With this new bridge, residents can comfortably use vehicles along the route,” she said. The project commenced on February 28 this year and is expected to be completed within two years.

Meanwhile, a RM4.1 million project to build the Kampung Rambai Waterfront is also in progress to beautify the area and boost tourism appeal in Bekenu.

“The first phase will begin on April 4 and is expected to be completed within a year. It will be followed by a second phase that connects the riverbank to the upstream area,” Rosey said. — DayakDaily
