Former Dapsy Kuching chief pleads not guilty to defacing monolingual road signs

KUCHING, March 23: Former Democratic Action Parti Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Kuching chief Ting Ying Ying was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here over an incident last year involving the monolingual road signs at Lebuh Wayang, Jalan Main Bazaar and Jalan Green Hill.

Ting pleaded not guilty to the charge framed under By-Law 22(1)(a) of the Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By Laws 1999.


Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi fixed March 31 for the new mention date for this case.

Ting was charged with marking the names of the roads in Chinese characters on the road signs belonging to Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) without the written permission of the Chief Administrative Officer, at Lebuh Way, Jalan Main Bazaar and Jalan Green Hill, at about 10.30 am on August 20, 2020.

She was charged under By-Law 22(1)(a) of the Local Authorities (Cleanliness) By Laws 1999 and punishable under By-Law 22-(2) of the same By-Laws, which carries a fine of RM1,500 for the first offence and a further fine of RM3,000 or nine months’ imprisonment for each subsequent offence.
