KUCHING, Nov 19: Forest Department of Sarawak (FDS) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sarawak Energy) planted 1,032 trees at Sabal Forest Reserve yesterday (Nov 18).
The saplings of high-value indigenous species such as ‘Meranti’ and ‘Selangan’ were planted. This joint initiative saw the participation of 150 people comprising Sarawak Energy staff from Group Chief Operating Officer’s (GCOO) Office, Corporate Services, SESCO, HSSE (Health, Safety, Security and Environment), Project Delivery and Research and Development (R&D), as well as FDS personnel and local communities.
The planting programme was held in conjunction with Sarawak Energy’s corporate-level ‘10-Year Integrated Planting, Protection and Habitat Conservation Campaign’ (2021-2030) supporting FDS’s Greening Sarawak Campaign.
“While today’s tree-planting event contributed to the cumulative number of trees planted in Sarawak under ‘Greening Malaysia Agenda Through 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign’ (2021-2025), the more important reason for this effort is it is aligned with FDS’s attempts to combat climate change, which has emerged as one of the biggest problems confronting humanity today.
“As a vanguard of the Greening Sarawak Campaign, FDS is delighted to be bringing many participants from various agencies, industries, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the local communities together to preserve the environment,” said FDS deputy director Zarina Shebli in her opening speech at the event.
This collaborative effort also showcased Sarawak Energy’s commitment to environmental conservation and the enhancement of the natural habitat.
