Focus on solving flood issue instead of playing blame game, says Kota Sentosa rep

KUCHING, March 9: Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap has urged all parties to focus on solving the issue of floods instead of playing the ‘blame game’.

Yap emphasised that natural disasters like floods are unpredictable, and thus, the focus should be on addressing the underlying problems rather than assigning blame.

“That is why I have asked the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) to come up with their post mortem report so that we can find out where the actual problem lies.

“If our infrastructure is inadequate to actually cater the climate change, perhaps we need to reassess the whole comprehensive planning which the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) or the local council might already have.

“So we should look forward to solving the problem rather than putting the blame on the government and asking them to pay compensation and all that. I don’t think the government wants to see flooding anywhere,” he said when met after officiating at the ‘Free Health Check Day Programme’ held at Edon Pharmacy here today.

To resolve the flooding issue, he said it all comes down to the funding from the Federal or State governments, which must be supported by a detailed report of the situation.

He also said he would chip in to assist by using his own Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) funding if the amount required to mitigate flood problem in Kota Sentosa is within his capacity.

“For example, I have already submitted (an application) for Hui Sing area, it’s not much – RM250,000 but that is subject to approval and subject to the bill of quantities (BQ).

“I’m just trying to do whatever I can rather than finding fault in this and that. Hopefully the focus would be on assisting to solve the problem. I think that’s a better way,” he added.

On the event, Yap urged the public to pay a visit to the Edon Pharmacy today and tomorrow (March 10), from 9am to 3pm, for a free health screening jointly organised by Kota Sentosa Service Centre and the pharmacy.

The Service Centre is also opening a one-day counter today for Kenyalang Gold Card (KGC) registration where the first 100 early birds would get their cards on the spot.
