SIBU, Aug 29:A five-year-old boy died after he was believed to have been slashed in an incident at a house in Jalan Rantau Panjang Jaya here yesterday (Aug 28) afternoon.
Sibu District Police chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said police received a report on the incident at about 1.45pm.
He said the victim was believed to have been slashed on the neck by his own uncle.
“Following the incident, the victim was rushed to Sibu Hospital for treatment. However, he was later pronounced dead at the hospital’s Emergency Unit,” he said in a statement today.
Abang Zainal said acting on information received, police arrested a 49-year-old man believed to be involved in the incident.
The suspect, who is believed to be the victim’s uncle, was subsequently brought before the Sibu Magistrate’s Court today, where he was remanded for six days until Sept 4 to assist in investigations.
“Several items believed to be related to the case were also seized at the scene,” he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years. If the death penalty is not imposed, the offender is also liable to whipping of not less than 12 strokes.
Abang Zainal also advised the public against making speculation or spreading unverified information, and urged them to allow police to conduct a thorough investigation. — DayakDaily
