MIRI, Jan 15: A temporary transit centre (TTG) for the homeless and vagabonds in Miri district will be established soon, says Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Sri Fatimah Abdullah.

Fatimah disclosed that her ministry has identified a strategic location for such purposes and further discussions to be held on Jan 19 would finalise the TTG’s location.

“I will come down to Miri myself to discuss further with the building owner,” she said on Saturday in Miri after attending the Social Development Council’s intervention workshop programme.

She added that the ministry would replicate TTG’s pilot project programme in Sibu for the ones that would be set up in Miri.

“The idea to set up the TTG is to address issues concerning the underprivileged in society, such as the homeless, because we want to help them to find jobs as at TTG we provide training skills so that they would ready for employment opportunities,” she pointed out.

Fatimah disclosed that the ministry has identified a total of 24 homeless people in the district.

Similar to the TTG in Sibu, the one in Miri would also provide physical and mental health screening services, substances abuse detection and provide reference assistance to the relevant agencies.

She said that the Ministry is also planning to set up a TTG in Bintulu as well.

Also present during the Social Development Council’s intervention workshop programme were Acting Miri Resident Jamilie Busrie and Sarawak Social Council secretary Dr Zufar Yadi Brendan Abdullah. — DayakDaily
