KUCHING, March 8: The residents of the Rejang Basin is getting good news as fast internet connectivity will be within reach soon with Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) in the midst of fiberising this part of Sarawak.

During a courtesy call on Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing today, TM Sarawak led by its general manager Jafer Sadig Abdul Lathiff conducted a briefing for Masing on its fiberisation journey in support of the Jalinan Digital Negara (Jendela) and State Digital Agenda, particularly for the central region of Sarawak.

At the same time, Masing also called on TM to extend its fibre optic cable network to Bukit Mabong, where the new Bukit Mabong Airport will be built and Baleh Dam as well as the interior of Sarawak.

“We want to ensure that folks in the rural areas are able to access information, conduct economic activities and online banking transactions, attend online classes and be in touch with the world, just like those in the towns and cities.

“In fact, fibre optic should even be extended all the way to Baleh Dam, not only for communication needs but also to facilitate security efforts in guarding one of our gems, the Baleh Dam,” Masing said.

In the meantime, Masing reaffirmed the dire need for fast, stable and reliable internet connection in towns like Kapit, Kanowit, Song, Sungai Asap and Belaga.

On another note, Jafer said, “The Coastal and Second Trunk Road Network has made the installation of poles for overhead fibre optic cables to be installed possible.

He expressed appreciation to the state government for the road network which serves to provide the installation of the fibre optic cables just as the Pan Borneo Highway does.

According to Jafer, the fibre optic deployment works from Kanowit to Kapit, which covers a distance of 109 km are ongoing.

He further added that some of the challenges faced during the process include the narrow road shoulder conditions, soil erosion and delays in road construction in certain parts.

“Once completed, this project will ensure the migration of 680 subscribers in Kapit, 120 subscribers in Song and 140 subscribers in Belaga,” Jafer said. — DayakDaily
