SIBU, May 2: Sibu Vegetable Growers Association is appealing for financial assistance from the government to rebuild greenhouses owned by some of its members which were destroyed in a freak storm on April 5.

“About 90 per cent of greenhouses belonging to our 300 members were destroyed in the freak storm. That was the first time that we suffered such a big loss,” said chairman Tieu Kiu Sing at a press conference here today.

A greenhouse is often used as a method of growing vegetables that reduces the use of fertilizers and pesticides.

He also claimed that the crops of his members still using conventional farming methods were also destroyed.

“We appeal to the government to assist the affected members.

“It is hoped that our voice will be heard by the government and the parties concerned to extend some help to those of us who have suffered such severe losses,” he said.

The increase in the cost of building materials has also made it difficult for the association’s members to rebuild their damaged buildings and equipment.

Tieu said the cost of building a greenhouse depends on the size of the structure, where greenhouses measuring 30m long and 8m wide cost about RM4,500 each while those measuring 50m long and 8m wide cost around RM8,500 each.
