Enough is enough: MPKS to take lackadaisical contractors to task

MPKS councillors are sworn-in today (Jan 5, 2023) for an extended service period of three months.

KUCHING, Jan 5: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) will relook into agreements of contractors who fail to deliver following their disappointing and lackadaisical attitude.

Its chairman Datuk Peter Minos vowed to get all projects assigned to the council to be either completed or take off within the next three months, following the swearing in of existing MPKS councillors today for an extension of another 90 days.

MPKS like all other local councils across Sarawak had their formal swearing-in for a three-month term until the end of March 2023.

For the next three months, Minos emphasised that MPKS will want to get the projects assigned to it to be completed or off the ground namely MPKS new headquarters, Asajaya town expansion, Tambirat market, the Floral Boulevard, Desa Ilmu lake development and the proposed modern waste management park.

“We will meet the consultants and contractors, and relevant agencies to expedite matters as well as cutting off the unnecessary delays and procrastination.

“We will call and meet the many contractors to strictly follow contract terms and agreed schedules, failing which MPKS will surely relook and review things.

“MPKS is fed up with some contractors who take advantage of the shortage of our monitoring and supervising staff. Enough of fooling around with MPKS,” he warned in a statement today.

It would thus be a very busy three months for MPKS.

“We want the new batch of councillors (who start) in April to start with a good and happy footing. That is the least we can and must do,” he said.

Apart from that, Minos added that MPKS will start the new year with two big challenges to be sorted out — waste collection and traffic jams, but MPKS will do its best in solving the issues.

“On the traffic jam matter, MPKS thanked the police for helping out. On waste collection, we met and talked to the scavenging contractors to shape up and they have got three months to do so.

“Public concerns come first. They are our priority,” said Minos who expressed MPKS’ determination to make the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project, the Kuching-Samarahan traffic projects and Jalan Mohd Musa expansion project a reality soonest possible. — DayakDaily
