KUCHING, March 4: A smuggling attempt involving RM297,260 worth of dangerous drugs hidden in a courier package addressed to a non-existent recipient was thwarted by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Sarawak.
According to a TVS news report, Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya revealed that the syndicate’s modus operandi was to leave the package unclaimed for an extended period at the courier company to mislead authorities and evade detection.
“JKDM Sarawak successfully seized a courier package suspected to contain ecstasy pills,” he said in a statement yesterday (March 3).
According to him, on Jan 15, 2025, a team from the JKDM Sarawak Narcotics Branch conducted an inspection using drug detection dogs at a courier service in Kuching.
Their search in the ‘Unclaimed Goods Section’ led to a suspicious Christmas gift-wrapped parcel, which upon inspection, contained 1,780 grams of ecstasy pills.
The seized drugs were confiscated under Section 30(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1) of the same Act for drug smuggling, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction. If sentenced to life imprisonment, the offender must also receive no fewer than 15 strokes of the cane.
“The public is urged to assist JKDM in combating smuggling activities, particularly involving cigarettes, liquor, fireworks, drugs, vehicles, and other contraband.
“Smuggling not only causes national revenue losses but also poses threats to national security and public safety,” he warned. — DayakDaily
