KUCHING, May 8: Sarawak’s Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) foiled an attempt to smuggle 10.1 kilogrammes of Methamphetamine, worth an estimated RM347,200, through Kuching International Airport (LTAK) on April 16, with the drugs concealed among snack items in a box.
According to a news report by TVS, Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya said the Special Passenger Inspection Unit (UKPP), with assistance from the Sarawak JKDM Narcotics Branch, arrested a local man at around 12pm after the suspect was spotted behaving suspiciously in the baggage claim area.
The suspect, who arrived from Kuala Lumpur, was seen retrieving a box from the baggage carousel before heading to the toilet with the box.
“A search of the box revealed ten transparent plastic packages suspected of containing the drug Methamphetamine,” he said in a statement.
The prohibited substance was hidden with snacks as a tactic to distract the authorities.
He added that the seized drugs are classified as prohibited substances under Part I of the First Schedule of Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the same act, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment with caning, upon conviction. – DayakDaily
