Eatery worker in Sungai Mador sparks new Covid-19 cluster in Meradong

KUCHING, Mar 20: An eatery worker in Sungai Mador, Meradong has trigged a new cluster of Covid-19 known as the Tanjung Genting Cluster in Meradong, Sarikei.

According to a press statement from the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the index case of the cluster is a 66-year-old man who worked at a food outlet at Sungai Mador.


SDMC said he was identified through the screening of symptomatic individuals.

ā€œThe index case of the cluster is case 12,133 who was identified through screening of symptomatic individuals.

ā€œThe case is a 66-year-old man who had a fever since March 8 and a rapid test kit (RTK) antigen test was performed on him.

ā€œThe RTK antigen results from a private healthcare facility showed that he is reactive on March 10,ā€ it said.

SDMC added further investigation and close contact tracing has yielded an additional 21 new cases including three reported in Meradong today.

The committee said a total of 66 individuals related to the index case have been swabbed whereby 22 individuals have tested positive, 39 individuals tested negative and five are still awaiting the results of their Covid-19 swab test.

It revealed that the 22 positive cases have been admitted to Sarikei Hospital and a low-risk quarantine centre in Sarikei for isolation and treatment.

On another note, SDMC said there were seven active clusters of Covid-19 which reported new cases out of a total of 35 active clusters in Sarawak.

Out of the 35 active clusters, a total of 64,046 individuals have been swabbed and 5,783 individuals were tested positive, 57,001 individuals were tested negative and 1,262 individuals are waiting for the results of their Covid-19 swab test. ā€”DayakDaily
