KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30: Former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) yesterday for observation, according to his son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir.
Mokhzani said there was no cause for concern regarding his father’s condition, explaining that the decision to admit the 101-year-old statesman was made to allow doctors to monitor him following the recent passing of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
“He was admitted to IJN for observation. The past two days have been quite stressful for Tun M, but for now, he is okay and there is no cause for concern,” he told Bernama when contacted today.
Dr Siti Hasmah, 100, passed away at IJN on the morning of Sept 28. She was later laid to rest at Pusara Negara in Precinct 20, Putrajaya, with full State Funeral honours.
Another of Dr Mahathir’s sons, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, had earlier said that his father had remained by Dr Siti Hasmah’s side throughout her treatment at IJN before her passing.
Dr Mahathir and Dr Siti Hasmah were married on Aug 5, 1956, and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year. They leave behind seven children and a legacy that spanned decades of public service and national leadership. — Bernama
