MIRI, Sept 29: Three road upgrading projects in Miri involving Jalan Cahaya, Jalan Padang Kerbau, and Canada Hill are expected to begin next year after the design process and approval by the Public Works Department (JKR) are completed.
In a TVS news report, Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the projects have been prioritised to improve road capacity and user safety, particularly along routes with high traffic volumes.
He said Jalan Cahaya, from Borneo Medical Centre (BMC) to Miri Hospital, and Jalan Padang Kerbau are among the routes requiring upgrading due to congestion and heavy traffic, as well as their importance as access routes to Miri Hospital.
“There are three roads that I have requested to be upgraded. One of them is the road along Jalan Cahaya, from BMC to the hospital.
“The road is very busy and needs to be upgraded into a dual-carriageway road with two one-way lanes,” he said during a press conference after the briefing for the State Road Projects under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) in Senadin here today.
For Jalan Canada Hill, upgrading works are required due to erosion issues in the area, which could pose risks to road users and affect the condition of the road.
Meanwhile, the project to install traffic lights at the junction of Jalan Miri Bypass and Jalan Eastwood is currently awaiting design approval from JKR before it can proceed.
Lee added that the installation of traffic lights at the junction leading to BMC should also be prioritised due to the frequent accidents occurring in the area.
“There have also been many accidents there, and I have requested that JKR make it a priority.
“This is because the junction currently does not have traffic lights. It is merely a turning junction to enter Borneo Medical Centre,” he said.
Meanwhile, the preliminary designs for the Jalan Padang Kerbau and Canada Hill projects are still being prepared by consultants.
The traffic light installation project at the Jalan Miri Bypass-Jalan Eastwood junction is also still awaiting design approval from JKR. — DayakDaily
