SIBU, July 10: Six illegal immigrants were among the 36 new Covid-19 positive cases detected here yesterday and, as such, the entry of illegal immigrants must be stopped, says Sibu Disaster Management Committee coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee.

In revealing this at his Facebook live today, Dr Annuar said the six were tested positive with the coronavirus while being detained at the immigration detention centre here.

The Nangka assemblyman forewarned that the illegal immigrants, who made their way here, could pose serious health threat to the locals especially with new and more infectious variants such as the Delta variant.

“I still remember that before the outbreak of the Pasai Cluster (Feb 7), four illegal immigrants, who were positive with the disease, were picked up at Jalan Teku.

“After that it was claimed that they had gone back to their country. We are not against all people but we don’t want outsiders to come here and not place under quarantine,” he said.

Dr Annuar further said the Covid-19 situation here was improving day by day with more people getting vaccinated, adding that “we don’t want to spoil it”.

“Our situation now is much better than the last six to nine weeks with cases on the downward trend. Our vaccination programme is also doing very well. We don’t want to spoil it (situation),” he emphasized.

Earlier, he pointed out that this week (week 27th)  recorded the lowest number of cases at 237, since the detection of the Pasai Cluster.

He, however, cautioned victory against the disease is not attainable yet.

“If you ask me personally whether I am happy or not. I am not happy but relief because if we are happy, we will become complacent and let our guard down. That is the time when cases will go up again,” he said.

He added this had happened from Week 16th to 19th when cases started to spike again after a drop the weeks before that.

“I want to thank frontliners, including doctors, nurses, hospital staff, police, army and Rela as we have managed to bring down the cases to 239 cases this week. Please do not consider this is a victory yet as we still need to fight against it,” he advised.

Meanwhile, he said the Sibu Bumiputera Graduates Association had registered 833 university-bound students for vaccination. — DayakDaily
