‘Don’t forget Teoh Beng Hock’: SUPP man urges PH leaders to address case, seek justice

KUCHING, Dec 20: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Dudong branch chairman Wong Ching Yong is urging leaders of Pakatan Harapan (PH), notably Prime Minister Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim, as well as leaders of Democratic Action Party and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), to seek justice for late Malaysian DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock.

According to multiple news reports, on July 16, 2009, Teoh was found dead on the fifth-floor landing of the Plaza Masalam building in Shah Alam, after having been questioned as a witness and held overnight at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office on the 14th floor of that building.

Teoh was a political aide to former Selangor state executive councillor (exco) member and incumbent DAP Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah at the time of his death.

“Leaders of PH, particularly the prime minister, DAP leaders such as (DAP chairman-cum-former Finance Minister) Lim Guan Eng, (DAP secretary-general-cum-Transport Minister) Anthony Loke, (DAP Wanita chief-cum-Deputy Communications and Digital Minister) Teo Nie Ching, and PKR leaders must not forget Teoh Beng Hock, who was found dead in the MACC building in July 2009,” Wong stated at a Winter Solstice dinner, as per a press statement.

According to the statement, Wong was extremely sympathetic towards the Teoh family, particularly the parents, after reading a press statement issued by Teoh Lee Lan (Teoh’s sister), who expressed her profound disappointment with the prime minister.

“The 95 per cent urban voters that supported PH in the 15th GE (general election) should now do a serious reassessment of their decisions on the quality of leaders whom they strongly supported,” he claimed.

Based on Lee Lan’s press statement, the Teoh family has been waiting for an appointment with the prime minister for 365 days, but in vain.

Anwar had made a commitment to thoroughly investigate and resolve Teoh’s case before taking office.

According to a news report by MalayMail, on January 5, 2011, the Shah Alam Coroner’s Court gave an open verdict for Teoh’s case and said it was not due to suicide or murder and no third party was involved in his death, while the Royal Commission of Inquiry on July 21, 2011 said his death was due to suicide. — DayakDaily
