KUCHING, May 14: A lack of awareness of the current rabies situation has contributed to rabies casualties in Sarawak since 2017.

Deputy Premier Dato Sri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said the public should not let their guard down and always keep in mind that rabies is still around.

“Awareness and not letting our guard down is important because rabies has not changed since 2017.

“If anyone is scratched or bitten by a dog, they must get treatment, and for pet owners, their dog must be vaccinated every year,” he told reporters after launching the Kuching Car Free Morning initiative held at Kuching South City Council (MBKS) headquarters today.

He said the government had implemented initiatives to curb rabies, such as vaccination programmes, but everyone is letting their guard down because they think rabies is gone.

“I urge everyone to do their part. Our behaviour needs to change. Do not just wait for the government to come and vaccinate (pets),” he added. — DayakDaily
