Deputy Premier explores path for Sarawakian students to study at Switzerland’s University of Bern

KUCHING, April 25: Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian has stated that he will ensure that the relevant authorities in Sarawak look into and pursue possibilities for Sarawakian children to study at the University of Bern in Switzerland.

Dr Sim, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government (MPHLG) Sarawak, emphasised the importance of children in Sarawak taking necessary steps to pursue available opportunities, whether in Sarawak or at the University of Bern.


“The Faculty of Medical at the University of Bern, established in 1834, is a highly esteemed institution that is ranked 94th globally and is among the top five in Switzerland.

“The University of Bern boasts a wide range of study options and is home to a large community of 20,000 students and 8,000 staff members. Operating with a substantial budget of Swiss franc (SF) 1 billion CHF, the university receives significant financial support from the Canton Government (34 per cent), the federal government (15 per cent), and competitive sources in the private sector,” he explained in a Facebook post today following his visit to the university.

He further explained that the university’s Faculty of Medical provides a wide range of facilities, which includes 56 Departments and Institutes.

“This is a number of very interesting new set-up that Sarawak can explore and collaborate with. Besides that, there are 124 professors with 11 professors in the faculty are engineers.

“There are 2,411 medical students, making it the largest medical faculty in Switzerland, with a budget of 211 million CHF from the university itself and 99 million CHF from third parties,” he added.

Additionally, Dr Sim remarked that the University Hospital of Bern offers extensive medical facilities with 1,354 beds, making it the largest university hospital in Switzerland.

“With employees of 11,300, this institution provides great opportunities for students to gain extensive clinical experience,” he added. — DayakDaily
