KUCHING, April 30: The Sarawak Unity Education Fund (SUEF), a private sector initiative that provides scholarships, promises no repayment obligations as long as recipients complete their semester, with a focus on assisting B40 students in Sarawak.

Grover Peter Gani, head of secretariat, stated that a selection committee for the fund has been formed.

He noted that the selection committee will supervise the application process and will be led by Datuk Gerawat Gala, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration, and Project Monitoring), who also serves as the fund’s selection chairman.

“We will create a website that is accessible to the public. The condition is simple. Any scholarship you receive will not need to be repaid, as long as you successfully complete your semester.

“Later on in the website, a form will be available for the public to fill out. Additionally, the website will provide detailed information about the scholarship criteria,” he told reporters when met following the launch of the SUEF, which was held today at a local hotel here.

During the SUEF’s launch, it was revealed that the fund had raised approximately RM3.57 million from a number of notable and generous donors.

While initially intended to open before the current semester, the scholarship programme is now scheduled to accept applications for the September intake.

“This scholarship will be open to both public and private university students, including those from Chinese schools.

“So it applies to every Sarawakian. However, the focus is on those in the B40 group,” Peter explained, adding that the scholarship will provide a significant opportunity for those facing financial barriers to higher education in Sarawak. — DayakDaily
