KUCHING, May 17: Deputy Minister of Education Malaysia Wong Kah Woh has approved an allocation of RM50,000 for urgent repair and upgrading works at SJK(C) Kenyalang, following his visit to the school which is over 50 years old and suffering from deteriorating facilities.

Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong, who facilitated the visit, expressed her gratitude in a statement today, thanking Wong for his swift response in addressing the school’s pressing infrastructure issues.

“Although SJK(C) Kenyalang is located in the heart of Kuching, the school building is over five decades old and many of its facilities are visibly deteriorated,” she said.

She cited several major concerns raised during the visit, including roof leakages, termite-infested wooden window frames, and uneven flooring, which she said have become serious safety hazards for students and staff.

Yong, a proud alumna of the school herself, said she found it imperative to bring the Deputy Minister to see the school’s condition firsthand. His visit included engagements with teachers and members of the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), after which the funding was promptly announced.

The RM50,000 allocation will be channelled through the Sarawak Education Department to implement necessary rectification works.

“Government schools like SJK(C) Kenyalang often rely entirely on federal allocations, which are limited. Many schools struggle to cope with rising maintenance costs and have little means to raise extra funds beyond the efforts of their PTAs,” she stressed.

She also extended her appreciation to Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii for his ongoing contributions to improving school infrastructure in the city through constituency allocations.

“The well-being and safety of our school children must always be a priority. I remain committed to working with all relevant parties to ensure students in my constituency have access to safe and conducive learning environments,” Yong added. — DayakDaily
