SIBU, Nov 9: The Deepavali 2023 Festival Maximum Price Scheme (SHMMP) for Sibu Division has identified eight types of goods with maximum prices.

Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sibu Branch head Kelyn Bolhassan @ Haliward announced that the SHMMP implementation for Deepavali 2023 runs from Nov 9 to Nov 15, spanning seven days.

The list of price-controlled items includes imported boned mutton, tomatoes, red chillies, coconut seeds (maximum price at the wholesale level only), grated coconut (maximum price at the retail level only), small shallots, imported large shallots, and Dal beans (Australia).

To prevent unjustified price increases by irresponsible traders, Bolhassan stated that notices under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 would be issued to parties found to have significantly raised prices suddenly.

Strict action will be taken against traders failing to comply with the regulations under this scheme, with fines up to RM100,000 or imprisonment up to three years for individuals, or both. Companies could face fines up to RM500,000.

Bolhassan emphasized that traders must adhere to instructions and maintain ethical business practices, while consumers should be aware of their responsibilities and rights.

He also warned against sudden price hikes after the scheme’s conclusion.

The success of the scheme, according to Kelyn, relies on the responsible participation of all parties.

Consumers with complaints about non-compliance can use the Ez ADU smartphone application, the website e-aduan.kpdnhep.gov.my, or email e-aduan@kpdnhep.gov.my to report traders not adhering to the scheme’s regulations. — DayakDaily
